What are schemas?

How we use schemas to support children's play at Little Learners

In early childhood development, schemas are repeated patterns of behaviour that children show in their play and exploration. They are ways children make sense of the world and understand how things work. Through schemas, children explore ideas such as movement, space, cause and effect, and relationships between objects.

Schemas are not random or “naughty” behaviour; they are meaningful learning behaviours driven by curiosity and cognitive development. A child may focus strongly on one schema for a period of time and then move on to another, or explore several at once.

Each week at Little Learners, your child will have the opportunity to explore these different schemas, in a safe and stimulating environment, where high levels of involvement can be achieved.
